Moira Canal Festival Moira Furnace
The venue for the 10th anniversary Canal Festival was Moira Furnace, on the recently restored Ashby Canal, North West Leicestershire, at the Heart of the National Forest. The event was held over warm and sunny weekend of 22,23 May. There were bands, bar, boats, Sealed Knot historic re-enactments, live steam, forest crafts, children’s entertainment, ‘Morris on Moira’, a wide range of refreshments, and more - fun for all the family, and featured the first tightrope walk across the Ashby Canal.
The Ashby Canal was completed in 1804, mining subsidence causing the demise of the last 8 miles. There are far-advanced plans to restore the canal to Moira. The festival site is next to the historic Moira Furnace, a listed building, on the 1 ½ miles of the Ashby Canal already restored. The restored length includes a swing bridge, and the only lock on the Ashby Canal. This kind of event brings forward the day when the Ashby Canal at Moira can once again be reconnected to the national waterways network and provide a green gateway to the Heart of the National Forest. The next festival date is proposd to be 21, 22 May, 2011.
